An uncommonly simple, ultralight, and highly versatile groupshelter.
The yurt-inspired, multipurpose Altai is theideal group shelter solution for both long and short trips where low weight is of the highest priority.
Simple, single wall design, very light weight, and roomy interior make it an excellent adjunct to other tents or as the sole shelter on any trip. Its center-plus-sidewall-support structure provides full standing height in the middle and full sitting height along the side walls, so while it sleeps 6 or more, it can readily seat 12 or more around its perimeter.
The Altai is most suited to below tree line and in more protected terrain, but it can also stand up to harsh weather year ‘round. And, because its center and its sidewalls can be supported by poles– or by skis or the like for the center, or trekking poles for the sides– as well as by suspending them, the Altai is quite adaptable to any trip or terrain. The lighter weight Altai UL is made from our ultralight Kerlon 1200 (whose 12 kilo tear strength is still far stronger than most “expedition” tent fabrics), and is the choice for those needing the lightest weight package.
We originally developed the Altai as an ultralight group-gathering shelter for the multi-day winter trips we run for our retailers and our staff. And while it certainly excels at its designed purpose, the Altai is simply an outstanding choice for anyone needing a large yet very light shelter.
Easily light enough to be carried in addition to other tents, the Altai is essential equipment for tour operators, guides, wilderness course leaders and other professional users– such as expeditions and special military units – who need a standalone “out building” for first aid, dining, briefing or classroom sessions, or even a larger, dedicated sleeping area. The Altai is just as well-suited to more “regular” users. Its simplicity and large space to very low weight ratio make it an excellent choice for Scouts, and, for paddle and bike tourers, it offers plenty of room to sort and/or fix gear out of the elements.
Ski tourers will find the Altai the perfect choice, as foot wells and/or sleeping platforms can be dug into the snow, and snow flaps keep the walls firmly in place. And, because of its remarkably low weight, a small group – even a couple – will find the Altai convenient, comfortable and palatial on any trip in any season!
